5th Grade Service Project
On May 11, 2011, the Wednesday 3:30 5th grade Religious Education class made a lasagna dinner and desserts for the Ronald McDonald House in Orange. The Ronald McDonald House was one of the community service projects the students choose at the beginning of the class year in October. It was required that each student earn the $5.00 to cover the cost of the ingredients. The aromas coming out of the church kitchen was a mix of Italian food and the best ever "Heavenly Chocolate Chip Cookies". The kids really liked the hands-on project of doing all the cooking. The dinner was delivered to the Ronald McDonald House the next day and will provide a meal for the families staying at the house while their children are receiving medical treatment at CHOC Hospital.
Ronald McDonald House in Orange provides a house for families that have children receiving treatment for cancer and other serious illness at the area children's hosp ital. Sometimes, their treatment can last days, weeks, and months creating hardship for these families. The Ronald McDonald House mission statement is "there's no place like home" providing lodging, meals and emotional support.
The class chose the Ronald McDonald House as their community service project, along with writing letters and sending goodies to a parishioner serving in the military. Part of the Ronald McDonald House project is also to collect "pop tabs" from aluminum cans, which are used by Ronald McDonald House as a fundraiser. Please note that this project continues through the summer and the "tabs" can be dropped off at the Religious Education office or brought in when Religious Education classes start again in the fall.
