The following was submitted by Pam Berry The Berry’s (Ed, Pam, Christie, Suzie & Jimmy):
Ed and I attended the very first meeting at the McGuire home up on Rutgers Circle, Anaheim Hills – we voted on the name chosen for the parish. I met Fr. Seamus at that meeting, told him about the house on Leandro that I had just listed the day before, and showed him the home the next day. I sold him what became our Rectory (& office in the 3 car garage!). The home is still our rectory. I donated back to Fr. Seamus my commission earned on the rectory transaction – he needed some “startup” funds for the parish. We attended the “shower” we gave him when he moved into the rectory on Leandro.
We attended Sunday Mass at El Rancho cafeteria – I was a volunteer Lector & Eucharistic Minister as needed (Fr. Seamus would “grab” you as you entered the cafeteria and “ask” you to volunteer!). I attended the first organizational meeting at St. Norbert’s hall – Jim and Pat Gattari, Orange Tree Deli, donated the spaghetti dinner that was served. I headed the “census” drive for Father – supplied all the “tract” maps of the areas for the volunteers. I was one of the many who volunteered going to homes asking for pledges to help finance the building of the church.
We all attended the Church ground breaking (one of my twin daughters is in the background of photos of the groundbreaking). We attended the first Mass in our new Church.
We worked the first Fiesta on our straw covered vacant property. I remember being in an RV in the center of the property counting money, rolling coins, until 1:00 in the morning! One of our volunteer “guards” was a policeman and he would stand outside the RV. I was chairman of our second pictorial directory, 1983. Our envelope number was 88. What fun it was starting this parish!
